The Arabic Union Catalog (AUC) visited Mauritania from April 27 to April 30, 2015. The visit aimed to check literature and knowledge heritage which Mauritania abounds with. A discussion was held about build up the Mauritanian Library Portal which will be a great addition to the Mauritanian knowledge. This expected project will contain all treasure of Mauritanian knowledge and culture into one portal to be available via the AUC Website and to be seen all over the world. Dr. Saleh Almusned and his accompanying delegation presented a paper entitled ‘The AUC at the service of Mauritanian libraries and culture'. This paper dealt with defining the AUC, its services, and how libraries in Maghreb Countries can benefit from it in building bibliographic database, authority files and training, which is considered as the cultural and knowledge accomplishment found to establish an Arab integration and joint cooperation. Dr. Almusned displayed the AUC services and activities in building the Arab Information Society. In this context, he shed the light on setting up an information network which includes the Arab libraries, portals of the national libraries, portals of translated books and training activities, authority files and the bibliographic database. He also explained that the size of the database is constantly growing quantitatively and qualitatively. Whereas, the numbers of bibliographic records has exceeded 2 million records of all formats of Arabic information resources; e.g. books, theses, manuscripts, electronic resources… etc. Additionally, the AUC delegation held a training course to 240 librarians about the Arab Digital Library. They also presented methods of using the Arab Digital Library, performing registration, searching and downloading files. Finally, the director of the center, at the end of his speech, pointed out that the Arab Digital Library is a complementary to the AUC. This digital library aims to encouraging the collaborative and integral efforts in the field of digitalization, which will result in huge investments in knowledge industry, scientific research, and information and communication techniques. All of these help to reach the knowledge society and support communication and cooperation within the Arab libraries, universities, research institutions, publishing houses, authors and knowledge industry.
