Culture communication between nations and people is an important means of promoting ethnic diversity. As well as strengthening relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and countries around the world with different languages, cultures, and religions. The King Abdul-Aziz Public Library supports the translation movement and cultural communication through the King Abdullah International Translation Award. The goal is to achieve success and accomplishments.

Nominations are invited for the "Eleventh Edition" of the King Abdullah International Translation Award. The nomination period begins on October 14, 2022, and ends on October 14, 2023. The award consists of six branches:

· Translation Award for institutions and organizations.

· Translation Award in Humanities from other languages into Arabic.

· Translation Award in Humanities from Arabic into other languages.

· Translation Award in Natural Sciences from other languages into Arabic.

· Translation Award in Natural Sciences from Arabic into other languages.

· Translation Award for individual efforts.

The award was established in October 2006 and is presented to the winning works of the King Abdulaziz Public Library every two years. The purpose of this is to promote translation between languages. The award also helps translators worldwide by recognizing outstanding translation efforts. As part of the award, knowledge will be transferred from other languages into Arabic and from Arabic to other languages, translations of sciences into Arabic will be encouraged, exceptional translated works will be added to the Arabic library, and efforts will be made to raise the level of translation in terms of authenticity, scientific value, and text quality.

An announcement was made at Cairo University's Grand Celebration Hall on Thursday, October 13, 2022. The library crowned the tenth edition's winners during this ceremony. In his capacity as Minister of Education, Professor Dr. Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Sudairy provided distinguished patronage. The event was attended by senior Egyptian officials, university presidents, intellectuals, writers, and authors. There were also many academics, professors, and students in attendance.

Deputy Minister of Education for Technical Education Affairs, Professor Dr. Shawki Allam, was present at the ceremony as His Eminence the Grand Mufti of Egypt.Professor Dr. Mohamed Megahed, the Egyptian Deputy Minister of Higher Education for Research Affairs, Professor Dr. Yasser Rafaat, the President of Cairo University, Professor Dr. Mohamed Othman El-Khasht, and the Ambassador of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to Egypt, Mr. Osama bin Ahmed Naqli.

 

A ceremony was held to present the King Abdullah International Translation Award in its tenth edition by His Excellency Professor Faisal bin Abdulrahman bin Muammar, General Supervisor of the King Abdul-Aziz Public Library. He stressed in his speech how the Kingdom is eager, under the leadership of King Salman bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, and his trusted Crown Prince - may Allah protect them - to embark on a developmental Renaissance in several fields, guided by their ambitious vision, within a comprehensive and unprecedented development and support plan. His address outlined the goals of the King Abdullah International Translation Award. By supporting the transfer of information between people and nations, this award serves as a bridge for cultural communication. As a result of promoting a comprehensive civilizational vision, he highlighted the Kingdom's role in fostering communication between cultures and civilizations.

 

Moreover, His Excellency Professor Faisal bin Muammar discussed the role of translators in shaping the enlightening movement in arts and literature, emphasizing that translation, which is practiced today among nations and civilizations, is among the sole means of understanding between peoples, especially today when technical standards are rapidly developing that rapidly connect the world. After expressing his sincere gratitude and appreciation to all participants, Ibn Muammar concluded his speech. Moreover, he thanked the university's president, officials, and academics for hosting the award ceremony. He also congratulated all the recipients of this prestigious award.

 

In his speech, His Excellency Dr. Mohammed bin Ahmed Al-Sudairy expressed greetings from King Salman bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, as well as his trusted Crown Prince - may Allah protect them - and acknowledged their hopes for the accomplishment of this award's noble objectives. Also, Dr. Mohammed Al-Sudairy expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the King Abdul-Aziz Public Library for organizing and overseeing the King Abdullah Award. As a result, it developed and achieved its goals. Finally, he congratulated the award winners in the various categories and wished them continued success and excellence.

 

In his speech at the King Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz International Award for Translation ceremony, Cairo University President, Professor Dr. Mohamed Othman al-Khosht, emphasized this point. Today's celebration of this global award reflects the strength of Saudi-Egyptian relations, which are rooted not just in shared interests, but also in blood, history, land, language, and culture. In addition, Dr. al-Khosht explained that the award has traveled the globe, being announced in numerous capitals and countries, and is currently being held in the Egyptian capital of Cairo. In closing, he acknowledged the Saudi-Egyptian relationship during the reign of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud, and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince. These two men will continue to maintain these relationships as long as both countries strive to do so.

 

Announcing the award winners was Professor Dr. Sa'id bin Fayez Al-Sa'id, the Secretary-General of the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Award for Translation. The winners in this edition have made significant contributions to scholarship and knowledge. Their work enhances scientific and creative progress in all fields of science through revolutionary visions.

Furthermore, His Excellency, the Deputy Minister of Education for Universities, Research, and Innovation, Professor Dr. Mohammed bin Ahmed Al-Sudairi, presented the awards to the winners in their respective categories. In the category of "Institutional and Organizational Efforts," the prize was jointly awarded to Al-Obekan Publishing and Translation Management, founded in Riyadh in 1995, and Arabi for Publishing and Distribution, established in Cairo in 1975.

 

Dr. Sawsan Hassan Al-Sawwaf from Syria and Dr. Laila Saleh Babasail from Saudi Arabia shared the award in the category of Natural Sciences from Other Languages to Arabic. They received this award for translating "Physics in Biology and Medicine" by Paul Davidovits into English. Saudi Arabian Dr. Abdul Latif bin Abdulrahman Al-Shahil and Egyptian Dr. Yahya Khalif also shared the award in the same category. They received this award for translating Berend Smit, Jeffrey Rimer, and Curtis Oldenburg's "Introduction to Carbon Capture and Storage".

The award was equally divided between Dr. Azeddine El Khatibi Riffi from Morocco and Dr. Azeddine El Khatibi Riffi from France for translating Philippe Descola's book "Beyond Nature and Culture" from French. The book "Introduction to Data Analysis in Social Sciences" by Paul Attewell, David Monaghan, and Daron Shaw was translated by Abdelnour Kharraki from Morocco.

 

Individual Efforts awards were given to Egyptian-German Dr. Sameer Mina Masoud Girgis and Saudi Arabian Dr. Hamza bin Qublan Al-Muzaini.

 

The ceremony featured a documentary film about the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Award for Translation. Several international capitals hosted the award's various editions, which were reflected in the movie. Arabic translations were affected. It also expanded the horizons of creative and innovative thinkers and creators, enhancing scholarly, scientific, and cultural communication. Several academies, institutions, and universities nominated it.

King Abdulaziz Public Library's 2007 editions to commemorate the award distribution reveal that the first edition was held in Riyadh, the location of the award's headquarters. Arabs and foreigners submitted thirty-six works from 30 different countries. King Abdulaziz Foundation for Human Sciences headquarters in Casablanca, Morocco, hosted the second edition in 2008.Two hundred and seventy-seven works were submitted from 25 countries for the second edition.

One hundred eighteen works representing 23 Arab and foreign countries competed for the award in the third edition. The award ceremony was organized by UNESCO and Paris in 2009 to honor the winners. The event was attended by intellectuals and cultural figures from all over the world. In the fourth edition, more than 96 works were submitted from more than 20 countries. In addition, an award ceremony was held in Beijing, China, in 2010 at Peking University.

During its fifth edition, 162 works from 25 countries competed for the award in more than 15 languages. In 2011, the award ceremony was held in Berlin in partnership with the Free University of Berlin. The Berlin Mayor attended the ceremony with distinguished German intellectuals and creators. Aside from being welcomed to participate, all languages were commended for their achievements.

One hundred sixty-six works were submitted in the sixth edition of the award, representing 30 different countries. In partnership with the University of So Paulo, the award ceremony was held in So Paulo, Federative Republic of Brazil. 145 works representing 18 countries and 13 languages competed in the seventh edition, held in Geneva, Switzerland, in partnership with the United Nations.

The eighth conference edition was held in Madrid, Spain, in partnership with Toulouse University in 2016. One hundred eighteen submissions were received from 24 countries and translated into 24 languages. In 2018, 134 nominations were received for its ninth edition in Riyadh. Eight languages were nominated, including translations, institutions, and individual efforts. Twenty-three countries submitted nominations.

Cairo, the capital of the Arab Republic of Egypt, hosted the tenth award ceremony. This project was a collaboration with Cairo University. Since the award's inception, approximately 1,500 works have been nominated in the humanities, applied sciences, and health fields. A total of 457 judges from more than 60 countries judged the award. There were 123 winners.

 

Following the announcement of the winners of the tenth edition of the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Award for Translation at Cairo University on Thursday, October 13, 2022, on the sidelines of the ceremony held by the Arab Republic of Egypt and organized by the King Abdulaziz Public Library as part of the Global Awards Program.

A scientific symposium was held at King Abdulaziz Public Library and Cairo University on October 12, 2022, titled "Time discrepancies between authorship and translation in the Arab World: Causes and Solutions." During the event, the General Supervisor of King Abdulaziz Public Library, His Excellency Professor Faisal bin Abdulrahman bin Muammar, gave the opening speech. The first session was chaired by Dr. Hisham Azmi, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Culture, and Dr. Karima Sami, Director of the National Translation Center in the Arab Republic of Egypt, presented the first topic titled "The Status of Translation in the Arab World." Then, Dr. Haitham Nahy, Director-General of the Arab Organization for Translation, presented the second topic, "Towards Establishing Scientific Standards for Translation." Mr. Mohammed Al-Faraih, Director of Publishing and Translation at Al-Obeikan Publishing. The impact of translation delays: challenges and solutions was discussed. The Director of Publishing and Translation at Arabi for Publishing, Mr. Sherif Ismail Bakr, presented a paper entitled "The Responsibilities of Publishing in Supporting the Translation Movement." Dr. Ibrahim Al-Balawi, a member of the Scientific Committee of the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Award for Translation, chaired the second session. A discussion of literary translation was followed by a presentation from Dr. Hamza Al-Muzaini on his translation experience, followed by a presentation by Mr. Sameer Mina Grace on his translation experience. The symposium concluded with a discussion of Arabic literature in Uzbekistan by Dr. Murtada Sayyid Amrof.

The General Supervisor of King Abdulaziz Public Library, Mr. Faisal bin Abdulrahman bin Muammar, has presented Cairo University and the Deputy Minister of Education a copy of the manuscript "Asul al-Khayl al-Arabiyyah fi Mukhtarat Abbas Pasha al-Awwal," which discusses Arabian horses' origins on the Arabian Peninsula. Additionally, the manuscript provides valuable information about Arabian horse genealogy.

The King Abdulaziz Public Library also received a shield from Cairo University's President, Mohamed Othman El-Khosht. Mr. Faisal bin Muammar received the shield on behalf of His Excellency, the General Supervisor.

• With the upcoming 10th edition of the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Award for Translation in the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Twitter account @KingabdullahIAT was launched. By introducing the award, providing a platform for a larger number of applicants, and responding to their inquiries more quickly, the account aims to facilitate communication with experts and individuals interested in translation. By using answers and opinion polls, it also seeks to enhance audience participation and interaction. Comparatively to other social media platforms, Twitter has a high percentage of intellectuals and academics among its users.

  In its various editions, the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Award for Translation has honored many Egyptian researchers and authors, reflecting a form of knowledge exchange between the two countries and the King Abdulaziz Public Library's role in promoting the intellectual achievements of its winners. A primary objective of the library is to enhance academic relations with prominent cultural institutions in Egypt through its broad cultural goals. It has also organized several cultural events and activities. Through the Arabic Union Catalog Center, it has also collaborated with Egyptian libraries. King Abdulaziz Public Library is involved in this vital project. Arabic Union Catalog has published Arab library indexes and conducted training courses in Egyptian libraries. This prepares staff to work at a high standard, familiarizing them with international standards and regulations.

 

• On Thursday, October 13, 2022, after the announcement of the award winners, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Public Library organized and hosted the tenth edition of the "King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Award for Translation" as part of the Global Awards Program.

• In conjunction with the upcoming 10th-anniversary ceremony in the Arab Republic of Egypt, the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Award for Translation Twitter account @KingabdullahIAT was launched. By creating the account, we will introduce the award and facilitate communication with translation experts and individuals. Applicants for future editions of the award will also have an easier time submitting their applications, and inquiries will be handled more quickly. Moreover, it aims to enhance audience participation and interaction through responses and opinion polls. Furthermore, Twitter has more intellectuals and academics than other social media sites. It is, therefore, an ideal platform for scholars and intellectuals.

  The King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Award for Translation has been awarded to several Egyptian researchers and authors in various editions, demonstrating knowledge exchange between the two countries. Through this program, the King Abdulaziz Public Library promotes the intellectual accomplishments of the winners. Furthermore, the library seeks to enhance academic relationships with top cultural institutions in Egypt through its comprehensive cultural objectives. In addition to organizing cultural events, the organization also contains cultural activities. As part of its collaboration with Egyptian libraries, it also maintains an Arabic Union Catalog Center. This project is one of the most important for the King Abdulaziz Public Library. Training courses have been held at the center, and Arab library indices have been published. As part of this training, staff were familiarized with international standards and regulations adopted by the Arabic Union Catalog and prepared to work at a high level.
